About Perrot State Park

Perrot State Park is located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Trempealeau Rivers in western Wisconsin. It protects over 1,270 acres of diverse landscape, including steep limestone cliffs and bluffs rising more than 400 feet above the river valley. This dramatic topography provides panoramic views and habitats for a wide range of plant and animal species. The park's forested areas include oak and maple stands, supporting abundant wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and many songbird species. Historically, the site was once home to the Trempealeau Band of the Ho-Chunk Nation and later European settlers who hunted and farmed in the area. Today, Perrot State Park invites visitors to explore nearly 13 miles of interconnected trails that traverse wooded ridges, river overlooks, ravines, and prairie remnants. Visitors can engage in activities such as hiking, mountain biking on designated trails, fishing in the nearby rivers, and birdwatching, especially during migration seasons. The park also offers modern campgrounds with electrified and non-electrified sites, picnic areas, and winter snowshoe and cross-country skiing opportunities. Key landmarks include Indian Mound Point Overlook, which offers commanding views of the Mississippi, and the Butterfly Overlook known for seasonal monarch butterfly sightings. Perrot State Park is prized for its scenic beauty, geologic features, and as a tranquil natural escape close to small towns and river communities.
